There are few key pieces of food in my life that are staples. Avocados are high on that list and probably always will be. They are a simple green vegetable that seem unassuming in their wrinkly, brownish-green skins, but that hold much more than what meets the eye.
As I'm sitting here writing this I'm with my family in the car on a road trip up to Medocino/Fort Bragg on the coast of NorCal and then up to Portland. I'm really looking forward to this and have been waiting for the first trip of the summer, which this will be. But, anyways. In the car right now we're listening to The Doors, to their album and song of the same name, Strange Days. My dad loves The Doors and I've only recently started to lightly dabble in them. But, the first characteristic that I noticed, and that my Dad always professes love for, is the band's depth. Their individual talent and therefore overall mystique and intriguing sound. They are in essence a band of depth and my father and I both love that.
And for probably the very same reason I love avocados. Similarly to The Doors, avocados hold a depth that we tend to forget. But, if you look a little deeper and make just a little effort to incorporate this amazing vegetable into your meals, you to will find the avocado's depth of benefits.
The first benefit to be easily stated is the fact that avocados contain the "healthy" fat. They contain monounsaturated fatty acids that are extremely beneficial for the heart. Specifically oleic acid which is anti-inflammatory and has been shown to reduce your chances of cancer.
Not only is the fat itself beneficial, but what it does in tandem with your body is to. Antioxidants and certain nutrients need fat to be absorbed into the bloodstream. So with such a beneficial fat as oleic acid it boosts your body's ability to absorb nutrients, making it even more powerful.
So instead of eating the cheese dripping yellow grease that will only clog arteries and hasten death you can, instead, eat an avocado. A perfect replacement for any other type of fat avocado can be put on pizza, sandwiches, pita, and anything else you can imagine. And if you eat it in tandem with other food with beneficial nutrients or antioxidants like carrots, blueberries, chia seeds, or really anything else you can benefit even more from the boosted absorption.
There are two kinds of fiber in the world. There's soluble fiber which feeds your friendly gut bacteria, boosting overall body health, and there's insoluble fiber which contributes to weight loss, metabolic health, and digestive efficiency.
And it just so happens that avocado contain a solid amount of both, actually they contain a lot more than many other fruits or veggies. And so with a simple incorporation of avocados into your life you can raise your fiber levels greatly. Thus raising your digestive and overall body health.
Lowers Cholesterol & Triglyceride:
In this society of heart disease it's important to be aware of what you're eating, especially if you have a specific problem. Thankfully avocados have been shown to reduce the markers for heart disease such as triglycerides and LDL, or the "bad" cholesterol and raise HDL, or the "good" cholesterol. So if you want to add yet another life prolonging tool to your toolbox of health then avocados are an excellent choice.
Eat the Seed:
Now this may seem like a weird case for the argument that avocados are awesome, but I'm just showing you the versatility of this veggie. When we cut into an avocado the seed and the peel go in the trash, but the seed doesn't have to.
In fact, 70% of an avocado's antioxidants are in the seed and it contains a lot of the gut-friendly soluble fiber. It you bake the avocado at 250 degrees for 2 hours, then you can remove the outer skin, halve the seed, then chop into medium sized pieces, and finally pulverize in a high powered blender like the Vitamix.
You can then throw some of this powder into smoothies with other strong flavors to combat the seed's bitterness or on top of salads, soups, pasta, anywhere! And as for the peel when removing the avocado simply scrape a little harder against the peel to dig up even more of the great antioxidants and nutrients.
And finally the icing of the cake of why avocados are awesome is that you can eat them so many ways! Here are a few...
- simply cut in half and add some salt and maybe hot sauce, then eat (scoop out) with chips or crackers
- on pizza instead of cheese
- on toast instead of butter
- on a sandwich (with sprouts? Tomatoes? Cucumbers?)
- as a side
And that's why! I don't think it can be denied that avocados are an absolutely amazing vegetable. Between their numerous health benefits, flavor, and versatility you can't go wrong or go boring with the always incredible avocado.
